Abner is our Dive Supervisor. His nick-name, Pala, comes from “Kepala”, which means community leader. He was born in nearby Talaud, North Sulawesi, in 1977. He is married and has two daughters.
He started diving in 1998 because he had a keen interest in seeing the marine life. The mystery of the underwater world keeps him interested in diving still now, years later. Abner was trained by the late, great Larry Smith, pioneer of muck diving, and has logged over 8,000 dives as well as earning his Divemaster certification.
His favourite critter is the Wunderpus Octopus because of its ability to change colors and its gentle nature. Abner’s favourite dive site is Jahir I because of all the unique critters that can be found there such as Hairy Frogfish, Flamboyant Cuttlefish, Stargazers, Mimic Octopus and Wunderpus. At Jahir, he once witnessed a flounder attacking a long-armed octopus, which then turned to attack the flounder! Ask Abner to find out who won this epic battle…
He is also a very talented artist and his work can be seen on the back of our T-shirts, the side of the dive center and in his extraordinary logbook full of hand-drawn illustrations.
In his free time, Abner loves playing football. His dream is to have his own football club where he can train young people who want to become athletes. His favorite team is Chelsea FC and if he could visit another country, it would be England.
