Calappa

Box Crab

Box crabs have a broad, rounded, convex carapace that, together with their wide, flat, shield-like claws, gives them a box-like appearance. When the claws are folded over the body, they resemble a shield, leading to the common name “shame-faced crabs.” Species of Calappa can be difficult to distinguish by appearance alone, so molecular phylogenetics is sometimes used alongside morphometrics to identify individuals with distinct color patterns, sizes, and textures.
