Color variable, usually yellow, red or pale tan, often with a weakly pigmented dark spot at posterior dorsal fin base. Illicium about equal to the length of the second dorsal spine. Shades of brown to yellow with skin flaps random lines,spots and dusky blotches. Usually solitary several individual may inhabit same float of sargassum seaweed. Sargassum or other algae patches near surface near shore to open ocean.

This species of frogfish is frequently found among algae, sponge, hard and soft coral, on walls as well as on rubble. The adults have their body overgrown by warty like bumps, juveniles, referred to as clown frogfish are smooth, yellow or white with red coloured rim on their dorsal fin and across the centre of their body. Found on sandy substrate and rubble. Small species, which is very cryptic. Often hides under rubble, in sponges, among sea weed and in disposed cans and bottles. It is a solitary species, rarely seen in pairs. Colour can be very variable and range from white, yellow to red, brown or black. It can be distinguished from other frogfish species by a series of small white spots on its body and long, claw like pectoral fins.

Found in a wide range of habitats: on sandy bottom, rubble, rocky and coral reefs and also among algal beds or sitting on mooring lines and moorings. The colour also varies greatly and can be anything from white to black. There can sometimes be patches of overgrow on their bodies. Juveniles have a beautiful pattern of black body with orange spots and blue tips of all the fins and tail. Usually stays in the same area for a few days or up to a few weeks.

They may be mistaken for A. striatus but A. hispidus do not have as profound stripes across the body and the lure like appendage has a pom-pom shape rather than a worm shape.
