MAHAWU VOLCANO

Trek around the crater rim of one of North Sulawesi’s volcanoes

Do you want to do something a bit more active? Departing from Lembeh Resort we drive through the beautiful Minahasan Highlands to the town of Tomohon. Arriving close to the caldera of Mahawu Volcano, we begin the trek to the crater’s edge where you can enjoy amazing views over the ocean, Bunaken and Manado Tua.

Mount Mahawu is a stratovolcano – the crater is 180m wide and 140m deep with two pyroclastic cones on the northern flanks. There are steps to the rim of the volcano and there is a purpose built viewing area at the top. When walking around the rim the terrain is varied from well maintained paths to uneven tracks.

After working up an appetite we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Tomohon which serves traditional Minahasan cuisine. On the return journey we usually stop at some other sights including the traditional market in Tomohon, the warugas (ancient Minahasan stone graves) and either the waterfall in Pinaras or Kali depending on weather conditions.
